Rachel Stothert is the Deputy Editor of MMM (Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly), published by Warners Group Publications Plc. Motorhoming since the age of four, Rachel’s top motorhome tip is to always have space in the fridge for local delicacies.
MMM has been Britain’s best-selling motorhome magazine for over 53 years. Packed full of inspiring motorhome travel features in the UK and overseas, the best campsites to stay on, motorhome tests and buying information, technical advice for the practical motorhomer and much more!

1. What inspired you to get into writing as a career?
I fell into it really. I did a science degree at university, but when it came to looking at the jobs available, the only ones that appealed to me were a PR job and an editorial job on a science journal. I managed to get an editorial assistant role at Warners, the publisher of MMM and other titles, and here I am 22 years later.
2. What do you find to be the most challenging part of editing a magazine issue?
The front cover is the trickiest job. Our readership is very varied, so finding the right words to appeal to as many motorhomers as possible is quite difficult.
3. Is there a particular issue you are most proud of?
I absolutely loved our 50th anniversary year issues in 2016. In each one we had a feature that harked back to a similar article in the inaugural 1966 issues. It was lovely reading those first issues and getting contributors to revisit some of the places and topics half a century later.

4. What’s the best part of working at MMM?
No doubt about it, the readers are the best part about working on the magazine. They are a real community and very engaged with the magazine and the topics we are writing about. The fact that so much of the magazine is written by genuine motorhomers is one of the reasons. Although I don’t currently own a motorhome, I was pretty much brought up in a series of them over the years, spending most school holidays and many weekends touring and I understand the draw of this hobby.
5. Is there anything coming up that MMM readers would like to know about?
It will be our 60th anniversary in a few years, which is exciting, and we are always looking for ideas, comments and submissions, from writing about your motorhome, to campsite reviews, travel features and upcoming projects. Just get in touch for guidance, or simply follow the style of the article in the magazine.
6. Where’s your favourite motorhome holiday destination?
That’s a tough one. North Wales, and Snowdonia in particular, is wonderful as it offers impressive mountain and coastal scenery. I also want to spend more time touring France as the infrastructure for motorhomers is amazing. I did manage to experience five amazing days bumbling along the Great Ocean Road in Australia. Apart from buying a couple of guidebooks and booking the campervan hire, nothing else was planned and that freedom to roam at will contributed to possibly one of the best adventures of my life.

Thank you for taking part in the #MeetTheContributor series, Rachel!
