Resurgence & Ecologist magazine addresses the environmental, social, and spiritual challenges and opportunities of our time. This is a magazine with a unique history, a joint mission to recognise the environmental crises we all face brought two separate publications – Resurgence magazine and The Ecologist journal – together in 2012 at a time when global concern and campaigning around climate change had reached a new high.

Today on Earth Day, we take a closer look at the magazine’s trailblazing journey to become one of the most important publications to provide a voice for change driven by a love of the Earth and its life forms.

Resurgence magazine – a pioneering publication

An early issue of Resurgence from the 1960’s on the Exact Editions platform

Founded in 1966 by English clergyman, writer and activist John Papworth, Resurgence magazine has been described as the artistic and spiritual voice of the green movement in Great Britain. From 1973-2016, the Editor-in-Chief was activist, author, founder and Director of Programmes of the Schumacher College international centre for ecological studies and former Jain monk, Satish Kumar. When it was announced that the two publications would merge, Kumar remarked: “…this
merger

represents
two
strong environmental
organisations
joining
 forces.“

The Ecologist – a home for radical thinkers

An early issue of The Ecologist from the 1970’s on the Exact Editions platform

The Ecologist emerged from the first wave of environmental awareness that followed the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment at Stockholm in 1972. The years surrounding this event also saw the establishment of environmental organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. The Ecologist was therefore well-placed to serve a readership increasingly interested in the impact of human activity on the planet.

Created by environmentalist, writer and philosopher Edward Goldsmith, The Ecologist was a forum for academics to publish papers that were deemed too radical to be published in other magazines or the mainstream press. It developed from a small academic journal with an initial circulation of only 400, to one of the world’s leading environmental affairs magazines with high monthly sales.

When Resurgence and The Ecologist merged, Goldsmith said: “The
 Ecologist
has
 spearheaded
 social, scientific
and
political
 ecology
 while
 Resurgence
has
spearheaded
cultural
and
artistic
ecology.
Now
 the time
 has
 come
 to
 bring
these
two
aspects
of
the
environmental
movement
together…

A joint mission to provide positive and progressive perspectives on the most important issues of today

Today’s version of the magazine is beautifully illustrated and connects readers with a diversity of visionaries, exploring nature and ecology, food and farming, spiritually and philosophy, social and environmental justice, ethical living, wellbeing, and the arts – an eclectic mix that cannot be found anywhere else.
