Today marks the release of World War II Military History as an app, which is available here in Apple’s App Store. It’s a brand new product for the digital publishing scene, and a brand new model in iTunes – the serialisation of books in app form.
Osprey Publishing has been creating books for military history enthusiasts since 1968, and it’s now one of the most successful examples of niche publishing around. The combination of Osprey’s rich archive of historical material and Apple’s recurring subscription will make a dynamic duo.
Content from across the Osprey archive has been optimised for the iPad to provide subscribers with monthly installments. This will create a community of readers in a way that wouldn’t have been possible with a one-off title, and using the built-in sharing features (via Twitter, Facebook and email) they’ll be able to communicate and learn interactively.
Exact Editions is excited to have been given the opportunity to inject new life into Osprey’s expertly curated archive. Working together we can deliver a product that users will truly appreciate and enjoy. As the issues build up, this collection will grow into a formidable resource for students and military history devotees. With 2423 titles on offer from Osprey, curators will be spoilt for choice on content.
The iPad/iPhone is the perfect platform to showcase strategical maps, detailed diagrams, photographs and illustrations – allowing readers to zoom right in, flip through the pages on the scroller or jump between related pages with ease.
Monthly or quarterly subscriptions are available in the App Store now, at £2.99 or £7.99.
Could this be the first of many book series which lend themselves to installments in magazine form? Only time will tell.
